Missing Toolbars

How to get back lost toolbars (or ribbons)
It happens a lot to my students.  They open up Word (or any other program).  They’re working away and suddenly the toolbars have disappeared.  (It’s called the ribbon if you use Word 2007.  Why do Microsoft have to change everything!!)

Let me show you what I mean.{+}

Microsoft Office 2007

This is how you want the ribbon to look (usually), with all the icons displayed.
You can minimise the ribbon – my students keep managing to do this by accident.  The ribbon and all the icons disappear.You do this by RIGHT clicking over one of the icons on the ribbon.  It can be tricky to get the mouse in the right place to get this menu.  If you get the wrong menu, move the mouse and try RIGHT clicking again.  (If, like my students, you manage to get this menu by accident – DON’T click on any of the options.  Just move your mouse back to the main body of the page and click to remove the menu.)
To get the ribbon back again.  Point the mouse at a BLANK bit of the menu bar (the bit that says home, insert, page layout etc).  RIGHT click with the mouse.  A menu should appear.  Click on Minimize the ribbon to REMOVE the tick.  The ribbon should be displayed again.

Almost Everything Else – MS Office 2000/XP/2003, Open Office

I’m using Open Office to show you this.
This is how you want the toolbars to look (usually), with all the icons displayed.
The toolbars can disappear, leaving you with just the menu bar.  Like this:
To display your menus again, click on View, select Toolbars.  Click on the Formatting and Standard options.  (You will probably have to go through this process twice if you have lost both toolbars.)  If you are using Word 03 or earlier, you will probably see the standard and formatting options at the top of the toolbars list.
